I didn't work at it at all. It just comes if the moment is right ... It comes spontaneously and the moment was right now. It was quite funny and the crowd loved it and that was the most important thing.

Everyone has a different personality ... I like to entertain the crowd and that makes me happy in a way as well. What I've done in 2007 with those impersonations and tonight playing with Johnny Mac, I think that's what the crowd wants, especially in these hours. I think these night matches are very special...

Djokovic, McEnroe share magic mimic moment

JIM SLATER / Sep 08 2009,NY

Novak Djokovic and John McEnroe, bad boy clown princes from two different tennis eras, traded comic impressions of each other and even played a few points in an impromptu US Open moment on Monday night.

To borrow 50-year-old McEnroe's famous 1980s catch phrase from his angry younger days, "You Cannot Be Serious" when two attention-grabbing entertainers played it for laughs on the Flushing Meadows hardcourts.

"Everyone has a different personality," Djokovic said. "I like to entertain the crowd and that makes me happy in a way as well.

"What I've done in 2007 with those impersonations and tonight playing with Johnny Mac, I think that's what the crowd wants, especially in these hours. I think these night matches are very special."

The comedic spectacle at Arthur Ashe Stadium came moments after Serbian fourth seed Djokovic defeated Czech Radek Stepanek 6-1, 6-3, 6-3 to book a place in the quarterfinals of the year's final Grand Slam.

Djokovic made famous his impersonations of such stars as Rafael Nadal and Maria Sharapova in 2007 and followed up by calling down McEnroe from a television commentary booth to come onto the court and play a few points.

"Johnny Mac made it all happen," Djokovic said. "It wasn't easy coming down in jeans and a shirt but he made it all fun."

Djokovic managed to mimic the mannerisms and serving style of McEnroe on the spur of the moment, pacing the baseline and hurling the ball high into the air before smacking it into the net.

He hurled his racket to the concrete and screamed at an imaginary umpire, channelling McEnroe's infamous rants to the delight of those who remained in the stands to the late-night finish.

"I didn't work at it at all. It just comes if the moment is right," Djokovic said. "It comes spontaneously and the moment was right now. It was quite funny and the crowd loved it and that was the most important thing."

Once McEnroe arrived, having grabbed a well-used racket along the way, he unbuttoned his white shirt, rolled up his sleeves and began an imitation of the 2008 Australian Open champion.

McEnroe bounced the ball repeatedly low to the court, a good-natured dig back at Djokovic's pre-serve habits.

McEnroe managed to serve a few balls over the net, making a memorable forehand volley winner past Djokovic. A few comedic swings later, they met at the net and exchanged pats on the back as the crowd roared in delight.

McEnroe won three Wimbledon titles and four US Opens, including his last Grand Slam crown in 1984.

Djokovic will next face Spanish 10th seed Fernando Verdasco for a semifinal berth, possibly against five-time defending champion and world number one Roger Federer.

With a little help from McEnroe, Djokovic charms New York

By Simon Cambers

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Novak Djokovic launched a charm offensive at the U.S. Open on Monday, marching into the quarter-finals and then thrilling the late-night crowd with a hit against former champion-turned commentator John McEnroe.

Twelve months ago, the Serb incurred the wrath of the New Yorkers by beating Andy Roddick and then irked the fans in a prickly courtside interview, prompting loud jeers.

On Monday, he had them eating out of his hand again as he thrashed Czech Radek Stepanek 6-1 6-3 6-3 before impersonating McEnroe and then playing some points against the four-time U.S. Open champion, who had been commentating on his match.

"First of all I would like to thank all the crowd for staying late," Djokovic told the fans.

"New York is a big place and there have been many big matches here at night. It's a privilege for me to play at night. I hope I have more chances to do it."

Djokovic has become well-known for his impressions of many players, including Maria Sharapova and Rafael Nadal, but has cut down on performing them in public of late.

But as McEnroe made his way down from the commentary box, he gave an encore, sending down a serve in the American's familiar style before yelling "You cannot be serious" when his shot missed the line.

When McEnroe arrived, in trousers and a full-sleeved white shirt, the two played a few points and Djokovic bowed in reverence as the 50-year-old McEnroe hit a winning volley.

"It actually was quite funny and the crowd loved it. And Johnny, of course, made a small favor coming down," said the Serb. "It wasn't easy playing in jeans and suit and collared shirt but it was a lot of fun.

"I like to entertain the crowd. That makes me happy as well. Playing with Johnny Mac and having fun, I think that's what the crowd want, and especially in this hour, these night matches make this tournament very special."

He will get back down to the serious stuff on Wednesday when he plays Fernando Verdasco, the 10th seed from Spain in the last eight.

"I think Fernando's been playing the tennis of his life." Djokovic said. "He reached the semis of the Australian Open and he is physically much stronger. He is fit and believes he can beat the other top players.

"But I think overall I played really well today. I played aggressive and I didn't allow him to control the match, that was the key."

Djokovic vs McEnroe Match Thrills US Open Tennis 2009 Fans

The winner of Monday's last match of the 2009 US Open tennis tournament Novak Djokovic was not even born when tennis's all time bad boy, John McEnroe was dominating the tennis world back in the early 1980's. After his win over Radek Stepanek in straight sets Monday night, Djokovic challenged McEnroe for a little match for the fans. The Djokovic vs McEnroe match was a special treat for the packed stadium.

The Djokovic McEnroe fan game pitted one of tennis all time great and ultimate "Superbrat" McEnroe against today's tennis fun to watch and very talented Djokovic. McEnroe dominated the tennis world in the early 80's winning three Wimbledons, four US Opens and a total of 17 Grand Slams. He was known mostly for his temper and the unpredictable blow ups at umpires and just about anyone else in his way.

McEnroe won most of his tournaments before Djokovic was even born. The Serbian, Djokovic was born in 1987 and is 28 years younger than McEnroe. Djokovic is a serious player on the tennis court, but is not afraid to have fun. That showed during the Djokovic vs McEnroe match on Monday night.

After his victory on Monday night during his interview, Djokovic first challenged his friend Todd Martin to come down and hit a few balls for the fans. Martin declined and then Djokovic turned to the broadcast booth and challenged McEnroe. McEnroe was one of the announcers for the match. McEnroe immediately started on his way down to what became the Djokovic McEnroe fan game.

Djokovic thrills fans with not only his incredible play on the tennis courts, but also with impersonations of other players. While waiting on McEnroe to make it to the court, Djokovic portrayed a great imitation of the bad boy McEnroe hollering at the ball person and setting up to serve and of course complaining to the umpire. McEnroe finally made it to the court for the Djokovic vs McEnroe match to begin.

While the actual play during the Djokovic McEnroe fan game was not the best of the tournament, it was definitely entertaining. Both champions had an obvious great time in the few balls they hit back and forth. The fans were the true winners in the Djokovic vs McEnroe match.
