2-adeVanPersie.gif

1a.jpg

2.jpg

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor set for four-match ban

The FA are set to hammer Emmanuel Adebayor with a four-match double ban after he turned Manchester City's clash with Arsenal into a personal revenge mission.

The £25million City striker is likely to be hit with a three-game violent conduct penalty for stamping on the head of Arsenal forward Robin Van Persie during City's 4-2 win.

And he will also be punished for improper conduct for sprinting the length of the pitch at Eastlands on Saturday to taunt the fans of his former club after he had scored for City.

A steward was knocked unconscious in the melee that followed Adebayor's celebration, and missiles were thrown on to the pitch.

I'm not scared!]

But speaking exclusively to The Sun, the 6ft 3in ace insisted: "I don't know what I have done wrong to get banned.

"I have not heard the police or FA want to talk to me. The club have not said anything."

Adebayor, who faced jeers throughout the match, added: "I heard that a steward was injured and I regret that. I have apologised to Robin van Persie.

"It was silly to run up in front of the Arsenal fans. But these people have been insulting me all game.

"Even in the warm-up they were insulting me. They were saying things that are not nice to hear, personal things.

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor tells Arsenal fans he is not scared of Emirates clash

Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor has told Arsenal fans he is not frightened of facing them at the Emirates later in the season.

The former Gunner is facing a four-match ban after running the length of the pitch to celebrate his goal against Arsene Wenger's side in front of the visiting supporters at Eastlands on Saturday.

That provoked anger in the stands among the north London club's travelling support and it sure to lead to a suspension from the FA.

But the Togo front man insisted he is not scared at the prospect of facing the fans when the teams clash again on April 24 next year.

Manchester City's sensational 4-2 victory over Arsenal, maintaining their 100% winning start to the season, was soured tonight when Arsenal's Robin van Persie accused his former team-mate, Emmanuel Adebayor, of committing a "mindless and malicious stamp" on him.

Adebayor, who scored City's third goal, looked lucky to stay on the field in the 70th minute when his apparent assault went unseen by referee Mark Clattenburg. Replays suggested that Adebayor knew what he was doing when his right foot made contact with a prone Van Persie, though he denied it after the game. If Clattenburg confirms he did not see the incident, the FA could ban Adebayor on video evidence.

There was clearly contact close to the Dutchman's eye and he needed treatment for a facial wound. Van Persie said: "I knew he was aiming for a collision because he changed the angle of his body to allow contact to be made.

"He moved backwards when his natural momentum would have taken him forward. I find that deeply disrespectful. He has shown a real lack of class today, to me and the fans."

Arsenal supporters were further infuriated when, 10 minutes after the stamping incident, Adebayor taunted them after scoring to put City 3-1 ahead. He ran 100 yards to celebrate in front of the visitors, and later apologised for his behaviour. "To be honest I'm very sorry for all this," he said, admitting "sometimes the emotion takes over". There were minor scuffles involving fans and stewards.

Adebayor said his collision with Van Persie was unintentional but the Arsenal man was unconvinced. "I do feel lucky that I have not suffered a greater injury," he said. "The contact was only centimetres from my eye. I have not received an apology from him, there were no words exchanged afterwards. He had his own agenda today and that is bad for football. It's bad for the game we all love. I want to make it clear that this has nothing to do with the result of today's match. We do not hide from that disappointment but I need to speak out about his behaviour."

Greater Manchester police have criticised Emmanuel Adebayor for sparking the crowd disorder that led to a steward being knocked unconscious during Manchester City's 4-2 defeat of Arsenal on Saturday. That is one of two incidents involving the player which is being investigated by the Football Association, with the strong possibility that he will face disciplinary charges and a suspension.

Adebayor will almost certainly be banned for three matches for the stamp on Robin van Persie that left the Arsenal striker with a gashed cheekbone and accusing his former team-mate of a "mindless and malicious" assault. City's £25m summer signing will also face sanctions for celebrating his goal by running the length of the pitch to antagonise the away supporters. The stamping offence is expected to be fast-tracked through the disciplinary system, meaning his ban will start with Sunday's derby against Manchester United.

Arsène Wenger described it as "very dangerous" and Van Persie released a statement accusing Adebayor of being "deeply disrespectful" and showing "a real lack of class to me and the fans". The Dutchman considered himself "lucky" not to have suffered a more serious injury, adding: "The contact was only centimetres from my eye. I have not received an apology from him, there were no words exchanged afterwards. He had his own agenda and that is bad for football. It's bad for the game we all love."
