Davis Cup

Davis cup

Can Novak Djokovic Win the Golden Slam in 2012?

Golden Slam (all four Grand Slam titles plus Olympic Gold in one calendar year)

As amazing of a year as 2011 was for top-ranked Novak Djokovic, 2012 could be even better if he can acquire a Golden Slam (all four Grand Slam titles plus Olympic Gold in one calendar year). If he can do that, he'd be the first male tennis player ever to accomplish it (Steffi Graf did it back in 1988).

Djokovic has started off 2012 in the right way, winning the Australian Open. It most certainly wasn't easy, with five-set victories over Andy Murray in the semi-finals and Rafael Nadal in the Finals. Djokovic was pushed to the edge, and survived the longest Finals match in Grand Slam history (just shy of six hours) in victorious fashion. Djokovic is now 1/5 of the way to the Golden Slam and an unique place in sports history.

As crazy as it sounds considering his competition, I feel that Djokovic is the only guy who has a realistic chance to earn this amazing accomplishment over the past several years. The 24-year-old Serbian seemingly flipped a switch on his play a little over a year ago and went from perpetual runner-up to Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer to dominating the illustrious pair convincingly over an entire tennis season by winning three Grand Slams, 10 titles, and finishing 2011 with a 70-6 record. In an era of great tennis, Djokovic is right now clearly the greatest.

Djokovic's biggest obstacles to a historic 2012 run will be his health and a victory over Nadal in the French Open. It was an aching shoulder that hurt him towards the end of the year in 2011. Five of those six losses occurred after the US Open when he was beginning to break down from such a long season.

His one remaining Grand Slam he has yet to win is the French Open, and defeating Nadal (quite possibly the greatest ever on clay) would be a monumental victory greater, in my mind, than any of his others. When Djokovic lost to Federer in last year's semi-finals we were deprived of this clash on clay. Don't think that Nadal is invulnerable on clay, however. Djokovic defeated Nadal at Madrid and Rome, two tournaments both played on clay in the month before the French Open.

The ATP schedule doesn't allow for much more rest in 2012 for Djokovic. With participation requirements in ATP Masters and 500-level events, and an additional tournament in the form of the Olympics in that short stretch of schedule between Wimbledon and the US Open, there's not a lot of time for recovery. If Djokovic is to complete the Golden Slam he will need a season that is even more superior than the one he had in 2011.

Djokovic and Nadal Are Spectators-in-Chief as Davis Cup Begins

2012-0209 The New York Times

Novak Djokovic was still collecting trophies this week, even if he is officially taking a break from the sport he dominates.

Djokovic used winning the Davis Cup for Serbia in 2010 as a launching pad to “cosmic tennis,” the catchy term employed by his coach, Marian Vajda. But Djokovic is leaving the 2012 Cup to others for now, and while he was in London on Monday to accept the world sportsman of the year award, his former Serbian teammates, like Janko Tipsarevic, and his longtime rivals, like Roger Federer, were busy preparing for the first round.

It will begin Friday, with eight World Group series spread over three continents: Europe, North America and, more unusually, Asia, where Kei Nishikori will lead Japan in its first Davis Cup match at this level since 1985.

It will be played against Croatia in the Bourbon Beans Dome in Hyogo, Japan, and it will hardly pass unnoticed in the host nation, not with Nishikori ranked 20th in the world. He is coming off a convincing run at the Australian Open, where he reached his first Grand Slam quarterfinal. Switzerland and Federer are at home against the United States on clay in Fribourg; Canada and Milos Raonic are taking on France in Vancouver, British Columbia; and Spain and its new captain, Àlex Corretja, are at home with an understrength squad against Kazakhstan in Oviedo.
