Murray

Murray, in Loss to Djokovic, Is His Own Worst Enemy

Djokovic, who played a solid match to repeat as champion, was the tougher player physically and mentally as he won his 30th tour title and 11th A.T.P. Tour Masters final.

Murray’s internal struggle is most obvious when he loses a point and immediately turns to his box with arms outstretched, spewing negative comments that kill his focus and give confidence to his opponent.

Too often Murray reacts with disappointment instead of determination when losing a point, directing the negativity straight at his coach’s box. Playing Djokovic is tough enough, but by also battling himself, Murray makes the task almost impossible. Ultimately the scoreboard provides the nail in the coffin.

Murray started the match with good energy, and his first fist pump came on the fourth point of the match, when he hit a backhand topspin lob winner over Djokovic to get the score to 30-30 in the opening game.

Djokovic held, then Murray held to 15 to tie the score at 1-1. The first sign of trouble for Murray came when he a missed a forehand return down the line at 1-1, 30-15. He raised his left arm in frustration — it was an ominous sign of a short fuse. Djokovic held to lead, 2-1, and Murray raced to a 40-0 lead in his next service game.

Then the wolves began to howl in Murray’s head.

At 40-0 Murray made a slice backhand error into the net, and at 40-15 Djokovic crushed a backhand return deep down the middle of the court that Murray ran around and hit as backhand. He was rushed and missed the shot in the net.

Murray immediately spun to his player’s box with both arms in the air and then slapped himself on the leg with his right hand. The negative self-talk had begun in earnest, even though he was still on serve in the first set, and also leading, 40-30, in his own service game.

At 40-30 Murray lost a grueling 24-shot rally when Djokovic rifled a forehand winner through the deuce court. Djokovic attacked hard with his court position during this point, making contact with the ball five times with at least one foot on or inside the baseline. Murray played it passively and never pressured Djokovic with his court position.

With Djokovic’s forehand winner barely past Murray, he already had his hand up and was beginning a verbal tirade toward his coach’s box.

Five deuces later Djokovic had his first break of the match, and Murray would lose his head and five consecutive games to drop the first set, 6-1.

The hole would prove too much to climb out of.

When players let their anger get to an unmanageable level they become too self-focused, and the other side of the net becomes a fog that they can’t navigate.

It’s hard to beat the world No. 1 when you are too busy beating yourself up.

It was fascinating to see the reaction of Murray’s coach, Ivan Lendl, to Murray’s meltdown during the match — a stone cold stare that offered no support for Murray’s self-defeating behavior.

Murray’s appointment of Lendl this year was seen as an intriguing marriage of different personalities. But it makes sense when you identify Lendl’s mental toughness as exactly what Murray needs the most.

For Lendl to earn his paycheck it’s not about teaching Andy how or where to hit a ball. It’s about how to better react to pressure, how to get slapped in the face and not strike back with anger and how to focus more on his opponent than himself.

Lendl can lead by example in these areas — sitting Murray down and showing him match after match from the 1980s and early 1990s of his composure under pressure.

Lendl would also be wise to show Sunday’s final to Murray. Video does not lie, and it removes the guesswork and opinion. It is the perfect coaching tool to show — not tell —  Murray where work is needed.

Lendl needs to condition Murray’s mind to better handle adversity; every match on tour involves difficult moments.

If Murray watched several of Lendl’s matches, and then Sunday’s final, he would see that where he needs to improve  most is not during points but between them.
