Novak Djokovic vs  Milos Raonic 6-7 7-6 6-3

Barca vs  Atletico 1-1

Arsenal vs Hull city  3-2  FA cup

2014Roma-0517-Nole-四強win-great

2014-FAcupFinal-Arsenal-fans-react

Djokovic survives Raonic onslaught to reach Rome final

For the second match in succession Novak Djokovic survived an Italian Open dogfight on Saturday, this time beating big-serving Canadian Milos Raonic 6-7 7-6 6-3 to reach the final.

Djokovic, who won a sizzling quarter-final against Spain's David Ferrer, was subjected to an onslaught of power by Raonic but eventually got the upper hand to book a final against either top seed Rafa Nadal or Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.

The Djokovic v Nadal dream final is the most likely scenario for the men's showdown but both players will have plenty of battle scars should that be the way it pans out.

Not least Djokovic who was involved in another punishing match against the 23-year-old Raonic - a clash of styles lasting exactly three hours.

He started in low-key fashion, apparently content to bide his time as Raonic unleashed serves at 230kmh.

The 26-year-old looked to have the first set sewn up when he won the first three points in the day's first tiebreak, only for Raonic to fire back with an incredible six-point streak on his way to sealing an opening set in which he flung down eight aces.

Djokovic was in the box seat in the second set when he finally broke Raonic's serve in the fourth game after an hour and 42 minutes, only for the Canadian to break right back in a game that contained an improbable backhand drop shot.

The set drifted to another tiebreak, and despite Raonic fighting back from 2-0 down Djokovic held his nerve to take it 7-4 and set up a decider.

Raonic dropped serve immediately in the third and that spelled the end of his challenge as Djokovic moved through to the final where he will be hoping to land a third Rome title and a 19th Masters 1000 crown.

Liga - Atletico stun Barcelona to claim Spanish title

Atletico Madrid broke the Spanish duopoly as they came from behind to claim a 1-1 draw with Barcelona at Camp Nou that made them La Liga champions.

The point was enough to see Diego Simeone’s men clinch the title ahead of Barca and Real Madrid, something that had been previously unthinkable.

Atleti were made to do it the hard way, with both Diego Costa and Arda Turan withdrawn through injury early in the first half.

And Barcelona looked completely in charge as Alexis Sanchez scored a rocket in the 33rd minute after a fizzing near-post strike.

But Diego Godin equalised four minutes after half-time, giving Atletico hope of claiming the point they needed to break the Barcelona-Real Madrid stranglehold on the Spanish title.

And Diego Simeone's men clung on - despite a tireless second-half onslaught from Barca - to give Atletico their first title since 1996.

It marks the end of a nine-year strangehold that Spain's big two have held on the title, and is almost certain to spell the end of Tata Martino's spell as Barca manager as the side finished trophyless for the first time since 2008.

As for Atletico, they will turn their attention to the Champions League final against Real Madrid next week, which will give them a chance to prove themselves not just the best team in Spain, but the best in Europe.

Tata Martino left Jordi Alba, Xavi and Neymar out of his starting lineup, favouring a front three of Pedro, Alexis and Lionel Messi. Simeone selected a full strength side, with Costa partnering David Villa up front.

The Catalans started the better of the two sides, dominating possession with their high-tempo style of play. But Atletico grew into the contest, despite an early injury blow to Costa. The Brazilian-born striker is now a doubt for the Champions League final having aggravated a hamstring injury.

Barca took the lead after 33 minutes in dramatic fashion. There appeared to be little on for Alexis when the ball dropped to him 10 yards out from goal, yet the Chilean lashed a shot into the net at the near post to make it 1-0.

But Simeone fired up his side for the start of the second half, and they found an equaliser barely three minutes after the break. Godin jumped highest to meet a corner kick, powering a header into the net.

Messi was enduring a quiet afternoon, but thought he had put his side back in front after smashing a shot high into the net from close range. But the flag was rightfully raised to indicate offside, and the goal was chalked off.

Barca piled forward in search of the goal that would have changed the picture at the top of La Liga but despite a couple of hopeful penalty claims and long range shots, they couldn’t find a breakthrough.

FA Cup -

Arsenal end trophy drought with comeback win over Hull

FA Cup, Wembley Stadium - Arsenal 3 (Cazorla 17, Koscielny 71, Ramsey 109) Hull City 2 (Chester 4, Davies 9)

Arsenal ended their nine-year run without a trophy as they beat Hull City 3-2 after extra time to claim the FA Cup at Wembley Stadium.

Arsene Wenger’s last bit of silverware came back in 2005 when they beat Manchester United on penalties to claim this very same prize, but nearly a decade had passed without a trophy before today’s result – which led to criticism of the Gunners boss.

Despite consistently bringing Champions League football to the North London club, small sections of the Arsenal fans had called for Wenger to vacate his post at the end of the season, but the Frenchman earned the right to rest easy on Saturday evening after his side wrapped up victory at a packed out Wembley.

The 133rd FA Cup final exploded into life after just four minutes as Hull took the lead when defender James Chester turned home a scuffed Tom Huddlestone volley, sending Bruce - who won the trophy three times as a player - and the Tigers fans into delirium.

And just moments later it was two, with Chester’s central defensive partner Curtis Davies reacting quickest inside the six yard box, smashing past the floored Lukas Fabianski from the tightest of angles following a goalmouth scramble.

Arsenal halved the deficit soon after courtesy of a wonderful Santi Cazorla free-kick, with the Spaniard wrong-footing Hull keeper Allan McGregor to find the top right-hand corner.

Hull looked as if they had stifled the Arsenal attack in the second half and would hold out for the win, but their hopes of claiming their first FA Cup took a hit as Laurent Koscielny equalised with 20 minutes remaining.

The Gunners continued to search for a winning goal in normal time, and, though it didn’t come within the 90 minutes, their persistence paid off as Aaron Ramsey netted in the second half of extra-time to end Arsenal’s nine years of hurt.
