Maldini: It's not my last derby
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Paolo Maldini will turn 38 in June, but the Rossoneri legend insists this won’t be his final Milan derby, as he can play on for another year.

“I have no intention of hanging up my boots at the end of the season and I’m sure I can play next year as well,” said the defender ahead of Friday’s showdown.

There had been reports he would end his career earlier than expected due to a knee problem that kept him on the sidelines for four months, but his return for the remaining months of the campaign has been reassuring.

“My situation has improved a great deal compared to the start of 2006. The injury is still there, but it has been treated and is much better. I am not too worried by it and can live with the discomfort.”

Maldini was rested against Chievo so that he could be in perfect shape for the Derby della Madonnina against rivals Inter on Good Friday, but his position remains an issue.

Having spent the early years of his career as a left-back and recently transferred to central defence, he has been impressively replaced during his injury by Alessandro Nesta, Kakha Kaladze and Serginho.

“At the base of it all is the necessity to play. I have been out of action for almost four months, so it has not been a psychological problem for me coming back and playing in an unusual right-back role. The important thing is to rediscover my match fitness so I can give my contribution to the team.”

He used to be teammates with Carlo Ancelotti during their time together in Arrigo Sacchi’s ‘Grande Milan,’ but is now taking orders from the tactician.

“The way I see myself is an extra weapon for the Coach who can sit there without causing problems until he is needed.”

Although aiming for the Scudetto is probably out of the question with a seven-point gap opening up from leaders Juventus, but there is still plenty to play for on Friday.

“We know there is a big difference between finishing second and third, as it means huge changes to your pre-season preparation for the Champions League preliminary round, especially in a World Cup year. Inter are looking to prove a point, but our motivation is also strong and I see no better way to gear up to the semi-final with Barcelona than winning the derby.”

Maldini has been in Serie A for over 20 years and commented on the recent attack on Nerazzurri players, in which Cristiano Zanetti suffered a minor head injury.

“What has happened recently is a lack of sporting culture on behalf of everyone: players, media and the fans. If you don’t love this sport, then you don’t accept defeat. It’ll be difficult to improve the situation in those terms, but we have the duty to try.”
