"Boy, I've coached a lot of great strikers. You can be the greatest."

雖然想到這位義大利人曾經教導過Klinsmann(Inter),Batistuta(Fiorentina),不過他還是有可能在說謊.

And while they may recall Trapattoni's six-month reign about as fondly as a whiff of a lingering fart, they may have to thank him for something. In a recent interview with the Sport Bild magazine, Gomez said he owed his confidence in front of goal to the Trap, who told him: "Boy, I've coached a lot of great strikers. You can be the greatest."

Considering the Italian has coached the likes of Jürgen Klinsmann and Gabriel Batistuta, it's possible that he was lying. The way Gomez has been playing though, it looks like he believes.

How Stuttgart's wild boys zoomed into pole position

At the start of the season VfB Stuttgart seemed to be in crisis. Now their fresh young team are leading the way in the Bundesliga.

Matt Hermann  2006-11-13

In a Bundesliga season that had lacked a definitive pecking order - five teams topped the table during the first nine rounds - the coming of the league's first "English week" carried the promise of an outbreak of clarity. Everybody would play three matches over a nine-day span; finally, we'd get to see who was up to what.

Perhaps the Werder Bremen goal machine would crush another three opponents and create some separation at the top. If they faltered, maybe second-placed Bayern would finally hit their stride and shut the mouths of the columnists who'd been overpraising their mooted title rivals. An outside bet to take the lead were Schalke 04, who trailed Bayern only on goal difference and were set to play two of their three matches at home.

The ball, being just as round as Sepp Herberger once found it, had other ideas. The once-blooming Bremen wilted to take just four points from nine. Bayern did the same. And though Schalke hauled in seven, that wasn't good enough to trump another team that just kept winning. The new team on the Spitze come Monday morning would not be one of these power sides laden with veterans lured by high wages, but a selling club whose gamble on youth and unproven purchases is, at the moment, paying off big-time.

As the new season approached, the pessimism of VfB Stuttgart fans was palpable and, by most rational measures, justified. The dismantling of the promising young side that had finished second four years back and beaten Manchester United in the Champions League the following season was nearly complete: the manager Felix Magath and defender Philipp Lahm had left for Bayern, striker Kevin Kuranyi and defender Marcelo Bordon for Schalke, and the midfielder Alexander Hleb and defender Andreas Hinkel had gone to Arsenal and Sevilla, respectively.

Matthias Sammer and Giovanni Trapattoni had come and gone in the intervening years and the club was stuck with Armin Veh, a journeyman's journeyman of a manager whose CV highlight was keeping Hansa Rostock hovering just on the right side of the relegation zone for a couple of seasons. Hiring Veh as caretaker at the end of last year was puzzling enough; extending his contract after the indifferent run-in he presided over seemed baffling. Topping things off, the club's big summer purchases were two internationals from Mexico, a country not known for producing a wealth of consistent European performers.

Expecting the worst looked like a good strategy as the season began. The Swabians opened with two losses in the first three games, both at home. But in their next match, away to Bremen, something happened. They came back from two down to win 3-2, and looking more important by the week was the emergence in that game of Mario Gomez, who scored the 87th-minute winner. Since then, the German Under-21 international Gomez has scored six more goals - three of them match-winners, another two to secure draws, and overall as many as he scored all last season.

In all, Stuttgart have now run off nine matches without defeat, including wins in their last four matches. With Gomez's scoring streak still very much in progress (he notched against Aachen and Hamburg this week) and the increasing contributions of 19-year-olds Sami Khedira and Serdar Tasci (whose goals downed Schalke last month), a new youth regime is at hand in Stuttgart. The Bild Zeitung, that bell-weather of sporting hype, has rolled out its old, Magath-era sobriquet for the team, "Die jungen Wilden", ("the young wild ones" or, perhaps more elegantly, "the wild boys"), a name which at a stroke erases the last few years of diminishing returns. Stuttgarters no doubt appreciate the gesture.

The end.
