Quarter-Finals - June 30   AOL Arena, Hamburg

Italy 3 - 0 Ukraine

Zambrotta 6 (I), Toni 59, 69 (I)

Luca Toni finally broke his duck with a brace in the 3-0 win over Ukraine and Gianluca Zambrotta also scored as Italy book their semi-final date with Germany. The Fiorentina striker had been criticised for his poor form so far in this World Cup, but found his scoring touch at the right time to see his team into the final four.

The Azzurri squeezed through to the quarters after Francesco Totti's penalty knocked out Australia with the last kick of the game, so they returned to the 4-4-1-1 system used against the Czech Republic. Marco Materazzi saw red that day and was suspended along with Daniele De Rossi, while Alessandro Nesta was still dealing with a groin injury, so Andrea Barzagli was the only remaining centre-back option.

Shevchenko faced his former Milan teammates, but Andriy Voronin was out for the tournament with injury, Andriy Vorobey and Vladislav Vashchuk left out in favour of Under-21 sensation Artem Milevskiy, Andriy Rusol and Viacheslav Sviderskiy. The two sides met in a friendly just before the World Cup which ended goalless, though Sheva wasn't playing. Mauro Camoranesi, who was dropped for the Australia game, burst through the centre and fired just wide after four minutes.

It was another Juventino, Gianluca Zambrotta, who opened the scoring in spectacular and unexpected fashion. The full-back ran on to Totti's backheel to find space and unleashed a powerful left-foot strike that squirmed past Oleksander Shovkovskiy at the near post. It was only his second goal for the Azzurri, his first since a 4-0 friendly win over Tunisia in May 2004. It was a special moment for Zambrotta, who flew in to Turin this week to visit Gianluca Pessotto after a suicide attempt.

Gennaro Gattuso got a knock to the back from Milevskiy, while Sviderskiy was booked for a foul from behind on Toni. Totti's ambitious long-range free kick was comfortably held, while Fabio Cannavaro intercepted a dangerous Ukrainian counter-attack.

Oleg Blokhin made a change after just 19 minutes, as forward Vorobey was thrown on for defender Sviderskiy in a tactical switch. Maksym Kalinichenko also went into the book for a foul on Camoranesi after the Juventus man had combined brilliantly with Andrea Pirlo.

Totti's splendid cross into the centre found both Toni and Simone Perrotta scrambling from eight yards, but Shovkovskiy and the defence were able to rescue the situation. Gattuso was unlucky when he fell and Anatoly Tymoschuk accidentally trod on his right arm, but the Milan warrior carried on with a bandage.

Perrotta combined with Totti, but the move was halted by a firm Rusol challenge. The first Ukrainian shot on goal came from Tymoschuk after 33 minutes, but it was well wide from 25 metres. Toni's looping header from a Totti free kick was comfortably controlled and Gigi Buffon made sure he got hold of a Shevchenko strike deflected off Cannavaro's shin before Shelayev fired well over from distance. On the stroke of half-time, Andriy Rusol went to ground clutching his right foot and had to come off for Vashchuk.

After the restart, Toni struck the side-netting and Cannavaro was felled when the ball struck him in a tender place. Italy have only conceded once in this World Cup and that was from an own goal. Barzagli nearly repeated Palermo teammate Cristian Zaccardo's trick on Kalinichenko's cross, but it flashged across the face of goal. From the resulting corner, Buffon flew to push Gusin's header round the post, hitting his head on the woodwork.

Cannavaro required a double clearance in a dangerous situation, then Totti's deflected shot was caught and Pirlo's chipped free kick for Grosso was unsuccessful.

There was panic in the Azzurri area on 58 minutes. A lucky ricochet reached Gusin and Buffon made a fantastic reaction save, yet Kalinichenko got the loose ball and Zambrotta's goalline clearance at the near post kept the 1-0 scoreline intact.

That proved a pivotal moment of the match, as less than 60 seconds later Italy doubled their lead. A corner was taken short and Totti's cross from the left found Toni's low header from six yards, finally breaking his World Cup drought after a club record 31 Serie A goals this season. Eight different Azzurri have now netted in this tournament.

Ukraine kept pushing after a dismal first half performance and Gusin's header from a long Kalinichenko free kick thumped the crossbar with Buffon beaten.

Toni won back the ball after a poor clearance and cut back for Camoranesi, but his shot was charged down by Vashchuk. Camoranesi had a penalty appeal rejected when he appeared to be tripped by Nesmachniy. Marcello Lippi made a double substitution with Simone Barone and Massimo Oddo - the only outfield player yet to make an appearance - coming on for Camoranesi and Pirlo, pushing Zambrotta further forward and on to the left flank.

The Azzurri made it 3-0 moments later, as Zambrotta cut back past one defender and rolled the ball across for Toni to tap in from four yards with a cool side-foot finish.

Shevchenko's looping header was over the bar and his powerful free kick pierced the wall, but not Buffon's guard as he punched it away. The final substitution saw Gattuso given a well-earned rest for Zaccardo, moving Grosso into midfield.

Totti found space through the centre on Toni's assist, but attempted a lob that was comfortably held by Shovkovskiy. Kalinichenko fired off target from distance and a Belik header was plucked out of the air by a confident Buffon. Shevchenko wanted to see out the game with a goal and showed some wonderful footwork, but was stopped by Grosso.

Toni nearly snatched a hat-trick from ex-Palermo teammate Barone's pass, but the goalkeeper rushed out to close down the shot.
