After---it's mean second half

Pippo

Kaka

Milan too strong for us

I'm Quitting, Ancelotti Will Continue - Milan Legend Paolo Maldini

Milan captain Paolo Maldini talked about his team's strong form, as well as his and coach Carlo Ancelotti's future.

Following the 2-0 victory away to Catania, which allowed Milan to increase the gap over third-placed Juventus to four points, captain Paolo Maldini commented on the match and his future to Mediaset.

"We are doing well, we are in a good condition now," he said. "We also have motivation, as we want to improve our position in the table, also compared to last season.

"The penalties? We are a team that plays in attack, with the ball on the ground, it's normal that we're awarded many penalties."

Commenting on his career, the legendary Milan captain said: "It will be my last season, I'm doing well, but it's the right time to quit."

On coach Carlo Ancelotti's future, the Rossoneri's captain commented: "I think he will stay, there is a harmony between the team, the coach, and the club, I think he will stay at Milan."

Serie A Week 34 - 2009-0503

Catania 0 - 2 Milan

Inzaghi 27 (M), Kaka 52 (M)

Stadio Massimino

Pippo Inzaghi's 11th goal in eight games maintained Milan's splendid form and second place.

The Scudetto hopes were looking more of a utopia after Inter's win over Lazio last night meant they needed only six points from four remaining games. Instead the Rossoneri had to focus on keeping second place away from Juventus and made this tricky trip to Sicily without the suspended Mathieu Flamini and the usual injury list (Bonera, Borriello, Gattuso, Nesta, Kaladze, Abbiati, Antonini). The Sicilians had already secured safety and missed Pablo Ledesma, Potenza and the banned Fabio Sciacca.

Milan had won six of their previous seven games, but their record in Catania was of three victories, two defeats and six consecutive draws.

Catania rattled the frame of the goal six minutes in when a corner kick was headed back into the six-yard box by Martinez and Giuseppe Favalli's attempted clearance thumped the upright!

Paolo Maldini almost scored at the age of 40 when he got on the end of a corner and looped the header over Kosicky, but Izco got back for a decisive goalline clearance.

Pippo Inzaghi just failed to get on the end of David Beckham's cross, then forced Kosicky into a double save in the rain.

Inzaghi opened the scoring with his 11th goal in eight games, although much of the credit was Kaka's. The Brazilian ran from midfield and threaded through for SuperPippo, who spun round between two defenders to drill in from eight yards.

Kosicky rushed off his line to close down Inzaghi and Nelson Dida blocked a Giuseppe Mascara daisy-cutter. Andrea Pirlo chipped the ball to the back post where three Milan players were totally unmarked, but Inzaghi turned the header just wide.

Milan doubled their lead straight after the restart, as Massimo Ambrosini nodded the ball back across the face of goal where it was flapped into Kaka's path for the easiest of tap-ins.

Inzaghi wasted a golden opportunity when he got in front of his marker only to volley Kaka's cross over from close range.

Inzaghi hit the woodwork when Kosicky deflected his shot on to the upright and moments later Kaka did the same thing, curling on to the opposite post with the goalkeeper beaten.

Alexandre Pato came on for the final minutes, sporting a newly-shaved head, immediately forcing Kosicky into a tricky low save.

Dida -6.5: For the second week in succession, it was an easy afternoon for the Brazilian goalkeeper. Did not have one save of note to make.

Zambrotta -7.0: Back at right back due to Flamini's suspension, Zambrotta put in a fine showing, and was solid at both ends of the pitch.

Maldini -8.5: Flawless display by the legendary defender. It is impossible to think he will be 41 in June. Almost scored with a header, but Izco cleared off the line.

Favalli -7.0: Had a nervy start and headed against his own post. However, the 37-year-old recovered well, and formed a mean partnership with fellow veteran Maldini.

Jankulovski -7.0: Back in the team, and staked a claim to keep his place with an energetic outing. Up and down the left flank before later filling in admirably in midfield.

Beckham -7.0: Beckham helped Milan take charge in the midfield, and used the ball intelligently throughout. The Englishman's header led to Kaka's goal.

Pirlo -7.0: Controlled the tempo in midfield, and sprayed the ball around without making any Hollywood passes. Did create a gilt-edged opportunity for Inzaghi before half time though.

Ambrosini -7.0: Continued his good form of late with another gritty performance. Bullied the Catania midfielders. Ambrosini's cross also eventually led to Kaka's goal.

Kaka -9.0: For the second week running Kaka was electrifying. Scored one, made one, hit the post, and created countless chances for Inzaghi. Such a joy to watch when he is in this form.

Seedorf -8.5: Has been criticised in recent months, but this afternoon Seedorf was impressive, particularly in the first half where he controlled much of the game, and was a real creative force.

Inzaghi -7.5: Scored yet again to take his tally to 11 goals in his last eight games. In truth though, Inzaghi should have had five today. Missed numerous chances, and hit the post. Unplayable movement as always.

Subs

Pato 7.0: Looked dangerous after coming on, and went close to scoring.

Bonera N/V: Replaced Beckham late in the day.

Mattioni N/V: Made his Serie A debut.
