Maldini: "Senza Kakà la Champions è utopia"

Btw……

Azzurri

Group B

Maldini: "Without Kakà the Champions League is a dream"
The retiring Rossoneri captain was speaking about the negotiations that led the Brazilian to Real Madrid: “Kakà is one of the five best footballers in the world"

MILAN, 10 June 2009 – A vale of tears. The day after Kakà’s goodbye, Paolo Maldini left football without hiding a certain pessimism. “It's the end of an era for Milan,” he said at his San Siro press conference. “To think of winning the Champions League without Kakà may be a bit Utopian.” The retiring Rossoneri captain was speaking about the negotiations that led the Brazilian to Real Madrid. “Kakà is one of the five best footballers in the world. He is the first one at this level to be sold and the other four aren’t going anywhere.” He paused and then added: “When Franco Baresi retired, I felt lost: everything looked black. But then Milan came back again. This club has always forged ahead big time: I know how it feels now, but if the situation is managed as it always is the story will go on.”

The ultras and Galliani Inevitably he returned to that Milan-Roma match and the ravings of a handful of ultras. However he also spoke about feeling alone and abandoned by the club. “Well, I expected something different. I think that Galliani has taken it personally. But I don’t believe that you can identify the club, Milan, with just one person. It has a number of managers and people. However, I have felt happier and more at peace having heard what Berlusconi had to say. He said the things that I’d have liked to hear.” Maldini is also convinced that Berlusconi will not take his eye off the team. “It’s always the same philosophy; Milan is still a desirable club.”

Ronaldinho and Pato Having hung up his own boots, he spoke of the departures of Ancelotti and Kakà, which he found painful and moving. But what about Milan’s future? Even Paolo Maldini is unsure, obviously influenced by the recent unprecedented events at the club. “Ronaldinho could become a leader, but it’s up to him. He’ll have to take on more responsibility.” And Pato? The siren calls from other clubs strike even more fear into the hearts of the fans: “I don’t believe he’ll go. I hope to see him at Milan for many more years. He still has to come to terms with his own talent: he’s only 19.”

Pirlo Then he returned to the club's targets. His normal smile dropped away: “What does Milan need? I don’t know the club’s transfer prospects. This was a team that with a few touches could have been great again, but without Kakà a lot more is needed. We have to wait and see. Then it is also Leonardo’s debut and he’ll have to put himself to the test. It’s a gamble, even though they've usually paid off for Milan in the past.” And Pirlo? The rumours about Chelsea are growing. “Enthusiasm is essential for achieving results. Perhaps it’s lacking at the moment, but the transfer campaign has only just begun. I think Andrea should stay, but I don’t know what the club thinks. He’ll think about it all very carefully not just 10 but 100 times before leaving.” But for Maldini, a great transfer campaign is also dependent on the availability of great players: “The difficulty is choosing the players who will give you that extra leap in quality, but there are only a few of them.”

Then “My future? Family life. I have had various sorts of proposals. Still nothing from Milan, but there’ll be time to talk about that. Lack of gratitude? I don’t think so. There are other priorities at the moment, but we'll continue to talk. Let’s say that if there were ever the chance to take on a position of responsibility it would be difficult to say no. One thing is for certain: I don’t want to be there simply to look good. Now I’m waiting for the team to get together to see what it’s like to be on the other side.”
