London, England

Defending champion Novak Djokovic can be considered the man to beat at the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals after concluding the regular ATP World Tour season with consecutive titles, but the 22-year-old Serbian downplayed his status as the ‘favourite’ during the media round tables Friday in London.

“It’s not for me to say if I’m favourite or not, considering the players who are participating in this tournament,” he said. “I don’t think any of us are big favourites because it’s the best eight players in the world, it’s very unpredictable. I think it’s going to be a very interesting tournament because it’s held for the first time in London, it’s in a new venue which no one has experienced before.”

While he remained respectful of the high quality field, World No. 3 Djokovic asserted his confidence in his game going into the circuit finale. “I feel very good on the court; I managed to find the right form in the past two months. Since the Cincinnati finals things were going the right way,” said Djokovic, who has a circuit-best 76-18 season mark. “I’ve been able to play the game that I played in most of 2008 when I won the Grand Slam.

“In 2009, I’ve played the most matches on the tour so it’s been exhausting, a very long year, but a year where I’ve had a lot of success; even though I didn’t win a major tournament until [the BNP Paribas Masters in] Bercy, I was very consistent with the results. I can be very happy with the season overall, but of course we all want to have a good result here in London, which, for this period of the year, is the most important tournament.”

Djokovic, who defeated Russian Nikolay Davydenko in the final last year, added: “I have the role of defending champion, which obviously brings a lot of responsibility and expectations as well. Being able to win week after week in Basel and Paris brings me a lot of confidence and motivation to do well here.”

Since the US Open, the lone blemish on Djokovic’s stellar 18-1 record has come against Davydenko in the semi-finals at the Shanghai ATP Masters 1000. He will have a chance to atone for that loss when the pair faces off Monday evening at The O2.

“The first matches will be important for all of us because then we can see how [the court] suits our game,” said Djokovic, whose two wins against Davydenko came at last year’s circuit finale.

Djokovic’s round robin group, Group B, also includes World No. 2 Rafael Nadal and Roland Garros finalist Robin Soderling, who will face off during the day session Monday.

“My approach doesn’t change,” Djokovic said of his strategy under the round-robin format. “Every match I try not to underestimate anybody and give 100 per cent. I’m going to try to win every match I play, but the good thing about this tournament is that there is a round-robin system so even if you lose one, or eventually even two matches, you are still able to go to the semi-finals.”

Though this will be the Serbian’s third straight year playing at the circuit finale, he expressed his excitement about playing at The O2. “This time it’s something new and we are all excited because we’ve heard how much attention this event is attracting in the public and a lot of the crowd is interested to come and watch the whole tournament,” he said. “250,000 tickets have been sold already which says a lot about the strength and importance of this tournament.”
