Injured Djokovic leads Serbia past US

"It's very strong emotion when you play for your country. I guess that's the biggest reason why I kept playing," Djokovic said. "It meant a lot to me personally and the whole team and the nation, and we are very glad to be in semi-finals again."

Davis Cup

World number one Novak Djokovic overcame an early ankle injury to lift Serbia to a Davis Cup quarter-finals victory over the US with a comprehensive 7-5 6-7 6-1 6-0 victory over Sam Querrey on Sunday.

Serbia won the tie 3-1, with Djokovic grabbing two of those victories.

或許真的會讓人感到you are not alone 吧!

Bravo, Nole!

Djokovic fell and twisted his right ankle in the third game of the opening set against Querrey. The world number one required treatment to the injury and struggled to move freely.

He said he probably would have stopped playing if he was playing a regular tournament but carried on because it was a team event, eventually securing the victory.

"If I had not been playing for Serbia with my team beside me, I am not sure I would have carried on," he said in a courtside interview.

"It couldn't have happened at a worse moment, right at the start of the match. I felt pain with every motion in the first 30 minutes so I just had to go for precision with my shots.

"These are rare occasion when you get to play for your country with 15 people on your team cheering you on so it's always a big responsibility."

Davis Cup

Serbia will host the Canadians in the semi-finals in September while Czech Republic will host Argentina in the other semi-final after both countries won their ties on Sunday.

2013DavisCup-0406-double-Serbia-win

Davis Cup - Serbia shock Bryans in United States to take lead In a shock of the world's number one doubles team, the patchwork duo of Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac overcame the United States' Bob and Mike Bryan 7-6 7-6 5-7 4-6 15-13 to give Serbia a 2-1 lead in the Davis Cup quarter finals.

After mulling throwing world number one singles player Novak Djokovic into the doubles, captain Bogdan Obradovic opted instead for Bozoljac, who had only won six tour level doubles matches in his career and had a singles ranking of 338.

But the tall Serbian responded brilliantly, clocking huge serves, groundstrokes and returns in partnership with the experienced Zimonjic to seal victory in four hours and 23 minutes.

"I know that I had that in myself," Bozoljac said. "Through the years, I struggled a lot with injuries and I couldn't really play consistent so that is the reason why I was not ranked higher.

"But I knew that if I give my 100 percent for one match, I can play on a really high level and I can match up with these good players."

While the Bryans had lost their last Davis Cup match in the United States victory over Brazil in February, they were favoured to beat the Serbs as they came into the match with a 20-3 record in Davis Cup and had won a tour high four doubles titles this year, including their record 13th Grand Slam at the Australian Open.

But while they staged a furious comeback in third and fourth sets in front of their home crowd, they could not come up with enough clutch play in the deciding set to hold off the Serbs.

The Bryans were two points from winning the contest on three different occasions, but with their backs against the wall, the Serbians stood tall.

With the score at 11-12, 30-30 and former top-ranked doubles player Zimonjic serving, the big Serbian hit two hard serves that produced netted returns by the Bryans to hold.

Mike Bryan had not been broken in the entire contest, but serving at 13-13 on break point, Bozoljac hit a screaming crosscourt backhand winner for the break to 14-13.

The Bryans have two chances to break back in the final game, but Zimonjic shut the door with two booming aces, blasting a huge serve down the middle to seal the match.

He and Bozoljac then hugged and danced around while Djokovic bounced up and down on the sidelines chanting Serbian songs.

"If this isn't the best performance of all time from me, it certainly is in Davis Cup," said Zimonjic.

The Serbians ended up with 125 winners to just 80 from the Bryans.

"We've seen a lot of people in this competition rise up," said US captain Jim Courier.

"You look at the numbers next to the (Bozoljac's) career, you see the performance today, something doesn't add up. You clearly see there was some inspiration, chemistry with Nenad on the court, and you say, 'too good'."

On Sunday, Djokovic will face top American Sam Querrey in the first match, which will be followed by the final rubber between Serbian Viktor Troicki and John Isner.

Davis Cup - Djokovic eyes return to form in Davis Cup tie versus US

Novak Djokovic believes he has left his recent poor form behind and will be in top shape when he leads Serbia in this weekend's Davis Cup quarter-final tie against the United States.

The world number one, who was upset last month in the semi-finals at Indian Wells by Juan Martin Del Potro and then in the third round at Miami by Tommy Haas, will open Friday's play against American number two John Isner.

That match will be followed by a clash between top American Sam Querrey and Serbia's number two, Victor Troicki.

Djokovic said that he played the worst that he has in three years in his 6-2 6-4 loss to Haas.

"You got to be ready to win and lose," Djokovic said.

"I've been very consistent in the last few years of my career. I understand that people are always expecting me to play semi-finals or finals of every event I play in. If a loss before that stage of the tournament happens, everybody starts questioning.

"I'm feeling good. I'm moving on. I'm trying to play well here, and hopefully we can bring the win to Serbia."

The tie marks just the second meeting between the US and Serbia in Davis Cup. Serbia won the only meeting, 3-2, in the 2010 in Belgrade.

The United States picked an indoor hard court in Boise, Idaho, partly because of its high altitude - 2,842 feet (866 meters) above sea level - which should benefit Isner and Querrey, both of whom are big servers.

"We are playing in the conditions which are not normal for the tennis," said Serbian captain Bogdan Obradovic. "Still, we practice for five days and also doing some fitness. So my players are ready."

US captain Jim Courier is hoping that Isner and Querrey can turn around their recent fortunes.

The 20th ranked Querrey has not reached a quarter-final since early February, while number 23 ranked Isner is 7-7 this year and failed to close out the US Davis Cup tie in February against Brazil, leaving Querrey to clinch the final rubber.

Isner has beaten Djokovic once, but is 1-2 against the Serbian.

"I have to play very well," Isner said. "If I don't, chances are it may not turn out so good for me.

"He's the number one player in the world. Everyone has to play well if they want to have a chance to beat him. Simple as that."

While Saturday's doubles is scheduled to be between the world's top team of Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan against Nenad Zimonjic and Ilija Bozoljac, Courier expects Troicki to play doubles with Zimonjic, as they have teamed together many times in the past.

The Bryans are 21-3 as a doubles team together in Davis Cup, but lost their last match against Brazil.

"We're itching to go and want to redeem ourselves," Mike Bryan said. "We think we can play better, so that's why we're excited for this one."

Should the tie go to Sunday singles, Djokovic is scheduled to play Querrey in the first match, followed by Troicki versus Isner.

The No. 44-ranked Troicki could then be called upon to play three rubbers, which he has never done so in the 14 ties he has played.

"Personally I feel fit and ready to play all three days if I have to," Troicki said.
