Top-seeded Novak Djokovic lost just five games as he cruised past Lithuanian Ricardas Berankis into the second round of the US Open.

The 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 scoreline over just 82-minutes of play gave a slightly misleading impression of the matchup on the Arthur Ashe court. Djokovic faced eight break points in defeating the former junior world No.1 - but saved seven of them.

The Serbian's efficiency could be seen in more statistics: 28 winners and just nine unforced errors.

Last year's beaten finalist was not at his absolute best but still had far too much for his 23-year-old opponent.

Berankis gave the crowd hope they may see a contest by producing a cross-court pass to take the first point of the match, but Djokovic asserted his authority to hold, then broke immediately after. Djokovic broke Berankis' serve again in game six and, despite facing a couple of break points himself, he served out to win the first set.

The second set followed a similar pattern, with Berankis unable to deal with the depth and power of Djokovic's groundstrokes.

Djokovic surged to a 4-0 lead in the third set, although Berankis finally claimed a break of his own in the sixth game of the set.

Djokovic will now face German Benjamin Becker in the second round.
