Always looking the bright side in my life的生活態度,人生去留本無常,這種小事算什麼!

PAOLO MALDINI: 'Feeling good, the situation is improving'
9/1/2005
MILANELLO - Paolo Maldini talked about his fitness during the afternoon press conference. The captain said: 'I am improving compared to the start of the season. The cartilage is the problem after all these years of football. I have been working on fitness this week and from Monday I will work on technique with the coach. Then I will be able to train normally. Have I thought about retiring? It happened last year when I renewed my contract. At 37 I feel it's normal to ponder it. I thought this year that a month and a half holiday would improve things but instead it was just the same as last year if not worse. The thing I can say is that I can go on and physically I feel fine. Of course, the cartilage and this part of the body is important for an athlete but it's not deteriorating as has been written in the papers. It's just a bit annoying.' Looking back at the Ascoli, the defender said: 'I didn't see a great Ascoli, first because they didn't play well and they aren't used to playing together. Then there wasn't a game from the start and the referee as a duty to look after not just the team but also football as a show.'

MALDINI ON THE DEFENCE
9/1/2005
MILANELLO - Paolo Maldini explained why the side conceded a goal from a dead-ball situation: 'The case on Sunday was emblematic: there were eight men in the area but the ball arrived where there was no one defending. In a zonal defence everyone has to defence as a team. When you give away a goal at a set-piece you have to say it's an error. However, it's not just down to the defenders. The percentage of goals conceded in this manner is growing in other teams too. We knocked Inter out with two dead-ball goals, Juve lost in a similiar way to Real and Liverpool. Our defence was the second-best in Serie A last season, just one behind Juve while we only conceded three in the Champions League group phase, none in the quarter-finals and five between the semi-final and final. Maybe it's true we concede too many goals but it's not a big problem. As for me, the three-man defence doesn't change much for me. It's a solution we can use a lot, but the coach's idea is to continue with four at the back, it's a method that enables to cover more space at the back.'

MALDINI: 'I want to be a regular'

9/1/2005
MILANELLO - Paolo Maldini has a clear idea on his future: 'My first intention is to always play. I can't accept being on the bench, however, my life has always been like that I would like to finish that way. It's not my intention just to keep playing for the sake of it. I will look to have some treatment even if it might take me out of the spirit and be less enjoyable. At the end, I like playing and apart from the knee I feel I can keep going at a certain level. I know I can improve but I will have to limit myself to working on the pitch on technique and tactics, which I like doing. The programme will be decided on a weekly basis.'

AMBROSINI: 'No drama, we'll look ahead'

9/1/2005
MILANELLO - Massimo Ambrosini also looked back at the Ascoli game: 'As captain I want to come back home with a win. It was a strange game, a lot has been said but you cannot attribute too much responsibility to the team. We could play a game and that's it. It's important to start on the right foot in the first game but we can't make a drama, we'll look ahead.' The midfielder has an eye on returning to the Italy squad: 'It's something every player wants. It's normal to have the ambition to be part of it, that can happen when you do well for your club.'

Legend Maldini may quit
Thursday 1 September, 2005  /Channel 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Milan veteran Paolo Maldini has admitted that he is seriously thinking about bringing his stunning career to an end.

The 37-year-old still has two years left on his Rossoneri contract, but he accepts the fact that he could retire before that date.
"I have thought about quitting," explained the central defender. "It is only natural to do so at my age."

The former left-back, Italy’s most capped player, has spent the last 20 years with the San Siro giants but concedes things are becoming increasingly difficult for him.

"I pondered retiring last year when I renewed my contract with Milan," continued the stopper.

"The same thing happened at the start of this season. I did think that having six weeks off would do me good but the situation has in fact worsened.

"There are highs and lows in which a lot of thoughts enter my head. The thing that allows me to continue though is my body, I still feel in very good shape."

Maldini, who is currently nursing a slight knee problem, added that he wants to quit at the top rather than in the shadows.

"When I do stop playing, I want it to be while I am still a first team regular," he underlined.

"That is not because I wouldn’t accept a place on the bench but it is because I have spent my whole career as a first team player."

Maldini says he will play on for now but he can’t guarantee what will happen in the immediate future.

"My situation will be evaluated month after month," he continued. "My contract expires in 2007 but I may not reach that date.

"It is not my intention to just carry on playing for the sake of it."

Maldini’s comments come just hours after teammate Gennaro Gattuso said he considered leaving Milan because of the pressure.

Gattuso pondered Milan exit
Thursday 1 September, 2005  Channel 4
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gennaro Gattuso has made the shock revelation that he considered quitting Milan this summer.

The battling midfielder is being groomed as a future captain of the Rossoneri, but has today surprisingly stated that he was pondering a transfer as recently as last week.

"In the last 10 days, I did think about leaving Milan because I felt under too much pressure," he stated.

"But I decided to remain because this is a club who look after players in every way possible. Before leaving a side like Milan, you have to think about it a thousand times."

Gattuso has spent six highly successful years at the San Siro following his move from Salernitana in 1999.

During that time, the former Rangers man has won the Scudetto, the Champions League, a Coppa Italia, the European Super Cup and the Italian Super Cup.

It took a little time for the player to settle with the giants, but he has since developed into a key element in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans.

Gattuso, currently on international duty with Italy, was linked with a switch to Manchester United recently.

But Milan, who plan to hand him the armband once Paolo Maldini retires, insisted that the player was unavailable for transfer.
