A Milan standard, captain Paolo Maldini has played in the intercity rivalry many times but that doesn’t stop him from getting excited and he doesn’t take the team’s standing in the table for granted:
‘The derby? We are really going to enjoy playing it. We understand the changes involved with arriving at third instead of second in the league. Including the change in the summer preparation. In addition, it will be an unusual season with the World Cup because the players will arrive tired and not all together. The Nerazzurri will try to redeem themselves, but our motivation is also very strong.’
The captain won’t know whether or not he will be available for the derby until tomorrow when the doctors give him the green light, but he is optimistic: ‘I don’t think that this is the worst moment of the season. We are preparing for the Champions League semi-finals, but we have plenty of time to recover after Friday. In addition, I think that there is no better way to approach the game against Barcelona than with a good result.’

THE ROSSONERI: ‘Milan have played a great season and are in the running for the most important prize. We are expecting a great game against Barcelona. I have come back to a team that are doing better than they were when I left them three and a half months ago. They are fresher and more confident. They will put their all into playing in this last month.’
THE LEAGUE: ‘I’m not sure that Milan have given up the league title to Juve. That’s not what the numbers say, we can still do better than we did last year. The difference is due to the great league performance of the Bianconeri. Certainly, there is some sorrow over having lost to Lecce, but we did try our best to win. The four points could have reopened the table and put some pressure on Juve.’
THE DERBY: ‘I joined in with my team-mates in our show of solidarity against the assault on Inter. I’m not expecting anything unusual from the fans on Friday. We have always gotten along in the past. I have seen teams in Europe applauded by their fans after an elimination, but it is different in Italy. We must all work to improve together: fans, players and press. It is a difficult battle, but we must try.’
HIS CONDITION: ‘Right or center? When it comes down to it, I just need to play. I’ve been out for around four months, it hasn’t been a problem for me psychologically to play on the right upon return. The important thing is to get into the rhythm of the game to make my contribution until the end of the season. My idea is to be available for the coach, without creating problems. I want to be there to give a helping hand. I am almost totally recovered from the injury. Last week my knee swelled, but that’s another thing entirely. Now, I am doing well.’
THE FUTURE: ‘I don’t intend to retire at the end of the season. I am sure that I will be in a condition to be able to play also next season. In respect to the start of the year, my situation has improved a lot. My injury exists because the joints suffer, but I have received treatment and am improving. It doesn’t worry me much, I can live with it. I have always made sacrifices, but now I know that I must make even more.’
