RUI COSTA BIDS FAREWELL

MILAN - Manuel Rui Costa was interviewed by Milan Channel following his transfer to Benfica. This is what he had to say:

THANKS: 'I have a series of thank-yous and excuses to make as I was going through my transfer. It was a bit unexpected and I had to go to Portugal in a day without saying good-bye to my friends and team-mates. I never thought it would have happen but I had to go without saying good-bye to everyone I got to know over the five years at Milan. I am back in my own country but I feel proud that Milan Channel has dedicated this time to me. When the news came out in Portugal, I felt proud to wear the Milan shirt. I missed Portugal, I had been away for 12 years, five of which at Milan, so I felt homesick.'

CHOICE: 'It wasn't an easy choice but I am happy to be back in Portugal after 12 years. Another part of me is sad to leave Italy as we had to leave another home. I always said it was a dream to finish my career where I started it. I felt it was the right time and I have left the best side in the world.'

MOTIVATION FOR THE MOVE: 'I never set out to make problems, I understood the situation. I would have been the first one to pick Kakà ahead of me when he arrived. It's not nice when you don't play. Even though I wasn't a regular, I felt very useful coming off the bench and I made my contribution. I would like to thank Doctor Galliani who gave me permission to live my dream and return home. I thank him not only for the five magnificant years at Milan but also for understanding what I wanted to do.'

RELATIONSHIP WITH COACH, TEAM AND FANS: I have always tried to help the team and when you come back into the side you have to convince everyone all over again. I understood the situation the coach was in but it wasn't easy not playing. I have always had a good relationship with Ancelotti, there were no arguments. The relationship with the team was splendid. I had a great feeling with the fans, they were lifted when I went on a dribble. I want to thank all of them in the name of my family for the 12 years I lived here.'

BEST MILAN MEMORY: 'The first day I arrived at Milanello I felt on top of the football world. Then, when we won the Champions League because we had plenty to celebrate, above all, as I was 30 when this success arrived. I played 18 of the 19 games and when Poalo lifted the cup it was my best moment in football.'

ANDRIY SHEVCHENKO: 'Milan have lost the one of the best attackers in the world. It's not easy to find a replacement. Could Ibrahimovic work well with Gilardino? Well, from what I have seen Inzaghi hasn't given up yet. We have to think of Inzaghi and Gilardino bringing more success. It's normal that Milan will bring in a replacement for Sheva's role although they might find one with different characteristics. However, this team has a lot of stars to please the fans.'

STORM IN ITALIAN FOOTBALL: 'Everyone is asking me about it in Portugal. I have only said that football is the loser. I am sorry for the fans who have put everything into the season only for to end in this way. It's the same for the players but I hope the storm passes and Italy becomes the most beautiful league as the one I played in for 12 years. I only want to think of the good times.'
